Sour Milk Pancakes

This delicious pancake recipe has been passed down through my family for 4 generations, going all the way back to my great grandmother – my mother’s mother’s mother.

Sour Milk Pancakes

This simple recipe can make some of the best pancakes you’ve ever had!

Makes 12 pancakes

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups sour milk or buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp oil or melted butter
  • Toppings: butter, maple syrup

To make sour milk (buttermilk substitute):

  • 2 tbsp white vinegar
  • Enough milk to measure 2 cups total
  • Let sit for 5 minutes before using.

Instructions

  1. Preheat a griddle or pan to 350°F.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, and sugar.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs.
  4. Add the sour milk and beat together.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until combined.
  6. Stir in oil or melted butter. Don’t over mix!
  7. Use a ¼ cup measuring cup to pour batter onto the griddle.
  8. Cook until bubbles form on the surface, then flip.
  9. Cook another 3–4 minutes, until golden brown
  10. Serve the pancakes, with optional toppings of butter and maple syrup

Tip: The first pancakes usually look a bit ragged, compared to the others. They taste just as good though!

Pancakes Variations

We usually have plain pancakes, but you can stir in other ingredients, if you’d like something a bit different.

Here are a few ideas for pancake variations. Add these when combining the wet and dry ingredients:

• blueberries (fresh or frozen)

• diced banana

• mini chocolate chips

Toppings – Try whipped cream, for extra special occasions, with sliced strawberries or bananas! Or, spread a bit of chocolate hazelnut spread on top, instead of butter.

On the Side: If you’re extra hungry, cook a batch of bacon too, and enjoy that with your pancakes. Or, cook some breakfast sausage, or heat a slice of cooked ham.

Family Tradition

This recipe is special in my family because it’s easy to make for any occasion – big or small. We usually make pancakes on Christmas morning, after all the gifts have been opened.

It’s a great breakfast for our camping trips too, or when we’re at our friends’ cottage, for summer vacation. Yum!

Pancake Photos

In the photo at the top of the page, that’s four-year-old me – carefully taking a picture of my pancakes, before diving in to eat them. That’s a lot of patience for a four-year-old! And apparently I liked my maple syrup in a separate bowl, for dipping.

In the photo below, my cousin is watching carefully, while our grandpa makes some pancake batter. She was only two years old in this photo, but ready to help out! Behind our grandpa, there’s a big electric griddle that’s heating up, ready to cook all the pancakes.
