For this week’s menu, I chose old favourites from our meal plan, like Sheet Pan Hot Italian Meatballs. And scroll down to see the fun food day ideas too, like Canada Day (Wed Jul 1).

There’s a week of hot weather ahead, with a mixture of sun, clouds and rain. We’ll have to celebrate Canada Day indoors, if that rainy forecast doesn’t change!
I’ve got burgers on the menu for Wednesday, but Keith can cook them on the George Foreman grill, indoors, if necessary. They’ll taste delicious either way.

Food Celebration Days
Almost every day of the year has a food celebration that we can enjoy, or ignore! Here are a few of the food days for the upcoming week, with recipe ideas for you.
Sunday, Jun 28 – Tapioca Day
It’s not clear how or when this celebration started, but you can use tapioca pearls, tapioca flour/starch, or instant tapioca in your supper recipes today.
Here are a couple of tapioca recipes to try:
- This recipe for Brazilian Cheese Buns includes tapioca flour, and shredded cheese. The prep time is 5 minutes, and the cook time is 20 minutes, and it makes 12 buns
- For a sweet finish to your supper, try this Tapioca Pudding recipe. It’s made with small pearl tapioca. The prep time is 10 minutes, cook time is 50 minutes, and it serves 4
Wednesday, Jul 01 – Canada Day
Happy Canada Day, if you’re celebrating along with us! You can read more about Canada Day on the government website.
In 2017, we celebrated Canada’s 150th birthday, and I made a week of Canadian-themed meal ideas. It was fun trying a few new supper ideas from across the country.
Here are a couple of recipes to try:
- The most well-know Canadian food might be poutine – French fries with gravy and cheese curds. Here’s an Authentic Canadian Poutine Recipe to try, or find a diner that serves them! The recipe takes about an hour, and serves 3
- And for a sweet treat at any time, try my recipe for Canada Day Maple Spread – it’s great on toast!
Friday, Jul 03 – National Eat Your Beans Day
It’s not clear how or when this celebration started, but we enjoy suppers that feature beans.
Here are a couple of bean-based recipes to try, from my old food blog:
- This recipe for Penne With Tomato and Beans is quick and easy to make. It’s ready in about 30 minutes, and serves 6-8. I usually cut the recipe in half.
- Or try this recipe for Mexican Beef and Rice Skillet – it’s a family favourite. Prep time is 10 minutes, it cooks for 25 minutes, and it serves 2
