There are two new recipes to try this week – Chile-Lime Salmon Cakes on Tuesday, and Slow Cooker Coq au Vin on Saturday.

Food Celebration Days
Almost every day of the year has a food celebration that we can enjoy, or ignore! Here are a few of the food days for the upcoming week, with recipe ideas for you.
Sunday, May 10 – National Shrimp Day
It’s not clear how National Shrimp Day got started, but shrimp are great when you want a quick supper!
Here are a couple of recipes to try, and they’d be perfect for Mother’s Day, if you’re celebrating.
- This recipe for Simple Garlic Shrimp is made in a skillet, takes 25 min to prepare, and serves 4
- And this quick recipe for Simple Oven-Baked Shrimp is made in the oven, in about 20 min, and serves 4
Thursday, May 14 – National Buttermilk Biscuit Day
We’ve enjoyed a few winter vacations in South Carolina, and Keith loves the buttermilk biscuits that are available there. They don’t turn out quite the same, when we bake with our hard Canadian wheat. One year, we brought home a bag of White Lily flour, which is the local favourite, but it’s not available here.
Here are a couple of recipes to try, and you can use refrigerated biscuit dough, to save time:
- This recipe for Chicken Pot Pie with Biscuits is ready in about 45 minutes, and serves 6
- And this recipe for Sausage Gravy Casserole starts in a skillet, then bakes in the oven. Total time is about 45 min, and it serves 8
Saturday, May 16 – National Barbeque Day
It’s Barbeque Day in Canada, and Barbecue Day in the USA – which spelling do you use?
If you have an outdoor grill, you can throw something on there for Saturday’s supper. And if you’re cooking indoors, try one of these recipes that feature barbeque sauce:
- This recipe for Oven-Barbecued Pork Chops is made in an ovenproof skillet, in about 30 min, and serves 4
- Or try this recipe for Quick BBQ Chicken. It’s made in a skillet, in about 25min, and serves 4
